A Bright Light Has Every Color In It
A Bright Light Has Every Color In It

Hanukkah celebrates the “victory of light over darkness”. Many people have used the line: “victory of light over darkness”…only to have their ideologies fall short down the road. But ideologies do not make for true victories. Faith in G!d does. Faith comes in all shapes, struggles, sizes and colors. Just have faith and try your hardest.

All You Need is A Spark

I visited with a wise friend recently to learn about Hanukkah. One of the things she said startled me:
“Why did they even bother looking for oil?”
I had not thought to ask that question. In the back of my mind I probably thought it was a blasphemous question to ask.
The temple was destroyed and desecrated. The oil vessels has been opened making them unusable. With so much destruction, why bother looking for oil. If anything why not just start from scratch?

Because there is no such thing as ‘from scratch’. We are a people connected -eternally- to G!d. There had to have been a little bit of oil… a spark to re-start the fire. The Jews knew it with certainty which is why they looked for it. It wasnt a matter of ‘if’ they would find it, but the act of finding itself that elevated things back to holiness.

In their time and even today, the Greeks represented the height of art and culture. But the world cannot run on art and culture alone. Who would have thought (certainly not the Greeks) that many years later they would be a gone civilization and the Jews would be thriving!

This card depicts an ornate Greek vase next to the modest little jug of oil that lit the lamp in the Temple.

Happy Hanukkah… big things are happening
Happy Hanukkah… big things are happening

During the time of the Maccabees, the Greeks forbade Jewish religious study. Jews secretly refused to obey the decree. Groups would gather and station small children to sit at the entrance and play dreidel as a diversion. To the Greeks it just looked like a group of kids having fun. But, to the Jews it was a way to save their faith.
